A group of teachers in Abhar issued a statement calling on people to participate in Ashura Uprising:
“Dear compatriots; for us and any freedom-loving human being Hossein’s Ashura has the message of fighting against oppression imposed by despotic rulers who use religion as a cover. In our era the rulers are using religion to oppress us and put pressure on us so far that any kind of protest is severely suppressed and one faces imprisonment. So we teachers following the path of Imam Hossein will join the protest marches and will chant ‘we will not surrender to oppression’ on Ashura”.

Suppressive forces on state of alert
Dec.13, 2010 - Tehran
Since December 11, Bassij and security forces have been stationed in the crowded regions of Tehran and have put up checkpoints with the aim of creating an atmosphere of fear and terror to prevent anti-government protests on the Ashura mourning ceremonies (Dec. 16). The government has learned from past experience that since Ashura is the anniversary of the deaths of a number of slain protesters, there are bound to be protests. The government is terrified of protests and has carried out precautionary measures from one month ago. They have announced a framework for mourning ceremonies to keep the ceremonies under control. Filming this religious ceremony is also a new method to control and identify would be protesters and to create an atmosphere of fear.
