Kerman- Feb. 27, 2011
According to reports, political prisoner Hassan Tarlani who has been suffering from a tumor which has grown in the lower section of his stomach is in a poor health but Intelligence Agency interrogators have denied him medical attention. This 23 year old student who has been sentenced to serve his 10 year prison term in Kerman Prison is suffering from severe pain and is even unable to rest because of the pain.
It is still not clear if the tumor is benign or malignant because he has not been checked by a specialist doctor. This student has been sent to the infirmary despite the fact that prison doctors have announced that they do not have the necessary facilities to assess the nature of the tumor or the facilities to treat it.
Tarlani’s father, who has to go to Kerman every month from Tehran to see his son from behind a glass partition for 20 minutes, can only ask about his son’s condition during this short visit. He has gone to various institutions to follow up his son’s treatment and for them to carry out the necessary examinations to assess the nature of the tumor but he has only heard empty promises and no measures have been carried out for his treatment. Tarlani’s family is very concerned for his health.
At least three political prisoners have been suspiciously inflicted with tumors in prison. Two of these political prisoners had malignant tumors. Political prisoner Alborz Qasemi passed away in prison last year after being denied cancer treatment and jailed Bazaar merchant Mohsen Dokmehchi is currently suffering from cancer but has been denied treatment.
