PMOI supporters brutally tortured in prison
Oct. 20, 2010
Political prisoner Afshin Baymani was harassed and violently abused on October 3 and was thrown in a solitary cell in cellblock 1 known as the ‘doghouse’ because he protested the violent treatment of prisoners by the head and assistant head of the Intelligence Unit in Gohardasht Prison in Karaj.
Kermani and Faraji, the head and assistant head of this prison’s Intelligence Unit along with head guard Mirza Aqayi and another guard named Zinali took Baymani to the torture room with shackles and physically tortured him for a long period of time with batons, electric batons, and shockers. Ali Mohammad, the assistant head of this prison who was also involved in the 1988 massacre of political prisoners also mentally tortured this political prisoner. After this violent torture, Baymani was taken to a cell with intolerable conditions.
The guards did not let Baymani bring any personal belonging or clothes with him and since his transfer to this cell, he has only had the clothes on his back. Prison guards have also lowered his food rations and limited the number of times he is allowed to use the restroom to 3 times in 24 hours. Guards only answer with batons to the protests of this political prisoner…
This political prisoner was arrested in 2000 when he was travelling with his brother in Khuzestan. When they stopped at a checkpoint, security forces opened fire on them. His brother, Mehdi Baymani died on the spot and Afshin was injured. He was then detained and taken to prison. His pregnant wife was then arrested and kept in detention for a long time. This political prisoner was initially sentenced to death because he and his brother were supporters of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran but after international protests, the death sentence was lowered to prison time.
