Commemorating Students Uprising on July 9, 1999

The Students Uprising on July 9, 1999 which lasted for 6 days imposed the first shock of downfall on the clerical dictatorship and showed that ‘university’ is still the ‘battalion of freedom’ as it has always been in Iran’s history.

This uprising was the beginning of the movement for liberty and the beginning of the decisive historical defeat of Mullahs’ rule.

The Students Uprising started in protest to the approval of a new law of censorship and confiscation of ‘Salam’ newspaper.

Student organizations formed a committee called ‘the Committee of Sit-In’. The committee condemned the confiscation of ‘Salam’ and called other students to join the sit-in at Koy-e-Daneshgah (section of Tehran University that its dormitory is located at, called as Koy in abriviation).

This uprising swiftly spread to other cities such as: tabriz, Shiraz, Mashad, Isfahan, Hamedan, Uromieh, Mahabad and some other cities summing up to 14 cities. The students showed that the best counteract for oppression is uprising.

On July 9, 1999 more than 10000 students organized a huge demonstration, in fear of which the clerical dictatorship attacked them at night by its SSF and Plainclothes. These vicious forces threw down some students from the second floor of the dormitory resulting to their death or injury.

Khatami was then president and ordered the Interior Minister to suppress the students.

The great lesson of this uprising was defiance of the regime. Students chanted ‘death to dictator’, ‘death to Khatami’ and ‘long live freedom’.

Now at the anniversary of Students Uprising, students intend to rise again in all universities and are calling people to join them.

Students, the most aware and prosperous elements of the society will rise in unity with other social strata at the anniversary of Students Uprising against religious tyranny ruling Iran.

Since last year’s election the uprising of Iranian nation has been continuous; the duty of students now is to call all social strata to hold demonstrations and call for freedom.

In unity we all will call ‘death to dictator- long live freedom’ and ‘death to Khamenei and death to the principle of Velayat-e-faghif’. We will demand the legitimate right of freedom of speech and we will demand the freedom of political prisoners.

We will tell the world with our cries that this uprising is alive and will continue till the clerical regime’s downfall.
