Iran at the wake of Labor Day

News / Protests

Labor news from Tehran – April 26, 2010

- At 10 am on Sunday April 25, 70 laid off contract workers from the Pars Oil Factory staged a gathering in protest to their expulsion outside the factory. Security forces entered the scene in fear of widespread protests.

- On Sunday April 25, about 40 to 50 expelled workers of the Sassan Factory gathered outside the factory again and demanded that someone tend to their complaints. Pro-government labor elements in the factory made an empty promise to them that they would solve their problem on May 10. After it was revealed that this promise was false, all the laborers agreed that they would take their revenge for these deceptions on May 1.
- According to Kian Tire workers, they have not received their salary for almost five months. They staged a number of protests in this time which at one time led to a fire in the factory but they still have not received their wages and their demands have not been met. The Iranian regime has made some promises to them that it will look into their problems this week to silence them on the wake of International Labor Day on May 1, but nothing has been done for them as yet.
- According to a salesman in an ice cream shop located in Darband, shopkeepers have been forced to put up a picture of Khamenei in their shops. He said that his shop was closed for 10 days because he had refused to put up the picture.
- From some time ago, the Azmayesh Factory fired about 1,700 or according to some reports, a few hundred of its workers after it went bankrupt. Currently only 120 workers are left in the factory and the factory intends to force these laborers into retirement as well because it does not have the money to pay them. Some of the laborers have said that they have no received their salaries or their compensations from last year. These laborers complained that there are no other jobs available and that some of the personnel who were fired are forced to do miscellaneous jobs, but that most are unemployed.

Especial report : Khomeini Port
ISC reports received from Iran’s ports in Persian Gulf  shows that crisis is dominant there. Poverty and umimployment at Khomeini Port and other ports are the fire under the ashes which will turn into a huge social crisis in few months.
A resident said: it will not stay like this. Chaos is in its peak. There are armed robberies. All homes are robbed. Who ever resists the robbers is killed. There is no official to look into this matter.
About export and import of goods at Khomeini Port he said: the first two months of the year should be the buissiest months at the ports but unfortunately it is not so. The work is almost stopped. Nothing can be done.
Of course last year was bad too.
We work with 10% of our true capacity. Formerly each month two ships were loaded at Khomeini Port but currently even one is not seen. This has made the laborers jobless and the only way left for them to provide their livelihood is robbery and illegal works. Poverty and armed robbery is the result of this condition.
Situation of some factories

Birjand, April 26, 2010- more than 80% of the productions of Kavir Tire Company is left in the sotrage houses thus the production of the company has dropped drastically. The same is the condition in Birjand’s soft drink factory.
Shahre-ray, April 26, 2010- A laborer of a factory in Shahre-ray’s comment about May Day: they didn’t give us permission for a march. They tell us we have no right to talk or to protest. When we defend our oppressed rights the government threatens us that we have gone far beyound what we are allowed to.
About his factory’s problems he said: “we were closed because we didn’t have the raw material for our work. The factory is open now but still no material has arrived. If the material is not provided there will be no cash asset and all 370 workers lef will lose their jobs too.
Immediately after Norooz 130 workers were fired.
The contract workers receive half wage. This is absulute slavary. They have enchained the workers. Even members of the Council are desperate because no body pays attention to what they say. The factory is falling apart.
