10 year old daughter of death row political prisoner lives in fear of father’s execution

Feb. 3, 2011
The waves of executions continue in Iran…
Many dissidents and the heads of the movement believe that the increase of the number of executions in Iran and the Islamic Republic’s haste in carrying out these sentences is to create an atmosphere of fear among dissidents.
Abdolreza Qanbari is another one of the protesters who was arrested during (the protests) on December 27, 2009 and was sentenced to death by the 15th branch of the Revolutionary Court headed by Judge Salavati on charges of enmity with God by having email communications with dissident groups and having links to a TV station outside of the country. The three member family of this death row teacher is living in constant fear these days…
Qanbari has been a literature teacher for 17 years in the impoverished areas in Iran. Some of his students say that he was the kind of person ‘who cried when he saw poverty-stricken children’.
Abdolreza Qanbari sings poems in his visits with his wife and children and sings a new poem in each visit. His ten year old daughter Sahel also sings poems for his father in her visits with him from behind a glass partition…
“My daughter does not understand the meaning of execution but his father has tried to explain about the death sentence in one of our visits to our two children so that if God forbid the death sentence is carried out, our children would not be shocked”, his wife said…
Currently, teachers who showed solidarity with this teacher or with his family are in Evin Prison and Abdolreza Qanbari’s children are not in a good spirits…
His daughter, is unable to visit him these days because she has school and her young brother Ehsan goes along with his mother to visit his dad in prison.
“Today is one of those days that you are not by my side”, Sahel begins in one of her letters to her father.
“Whenever I miss you, I write a letter or look at the blue watch you bought me for my birthday to see how fast time goes by and you are not by my side and I grow older and taller day by day… There were TV programs on for Father’s Day but I could not watch because it showed kids that were giving flowers to their fathers or were congratulating them and they were all so happy. They were not thinking about kids like us without their father’s by their sides and so I grew very sad and turned off the TV… I only have one wish and that is for you to come and be with me forever…”
On one of the visiting days, the families of political prisoners became very sad when they saw that Sahel, who was wearing her pretty clothes, had come to visit her father after some time and was trying very hard to bring her feet up so that she could show him her new shoes. She then sang a new song for him.

The letter says: “we read your letter about violations committed by most of MPs, the heads of Parliament, Judiciary and the Expediency Council in regard with the procedure of approval of the law for ‘the Fifth Progress Plan’. In the current critical situation the necessity of keeping the unity of powers and not saying words which the enemies would take advantage of is not deniable.
In such a condition we didn’t expect that a key organ of the Establishment and the honorable heads of Parliament, Judiciary and Expediency Council who are under the supervision of the Leadership and their decisions are well supervised by him would be accused of conspiracy against the government and taking advantage of their powers”.
